MACTE Museo di Arte Contemporanea di Termoli presents “LE 3 ECOLOGIE”, a reflection on ecology expressed through the works of 11 artists from different backgrounds and the first exhibition curated by the Director Caterina Riva.

In the spaces of the museum, the installations, films, drawings and photographs of Matilde Cassani, Piero Gilardi, Karrabing Film Collective, Len Lye, Jumana Manna, Jonatah Manno, Silvia Mariotti, Francis Offman, Francesco Simeti, Nicola Toffolini and Micha Zweifel bring the public closer to distant places, presenting visions that belong to past, present and future struggles for survival. With their works, the invited artists draw eccentric maps from the Mediterranean to the Pacific and the Arctic, outlining hybrid environmental contexts that stimulate our perception.

From New Zealand, Len Lye’s Tusalava, an animation made in 1929, which traces the beginnings of life from cell to complex organisms as if in a dance. Whutarr, Saltwater Dreams, a video made by Karrabing Film Collective, takes us to Australia’s Northern Territories where Indigenous communities reaffirm their symbiotic relationship with nature. The Swiss artist Micha Zweifel’s carved plaster panels that make up Calendar mark a time of work and manual skills, while the sculpture Ipogea by Piero Gilardi, a precursor of ecological issues, takes us into a cave where a river flows. Nicola Toffolini’s speculative-naturalistic drawings dialogue with Francesco Simeti’s artist’s wallpaper, which brings shrubs from the art history to the surface. There is also Francis Offman’s multilayered painting, which creates abstract collages with reused materials that carry traces of migrations, Jonatah Manno’s cyanotypes and sculptures inspired by discarded seascapes, and Silvia Mariotti’s photographic series Boutade, born in a pandemic when the artist created new images from her archive, unable to move from home. Wild Relatives, a documentary made by Jumana Manna, follows an agricultural seed from Syria to Norway, crossing climatic and survival challenges linked to constantly changing socio-economic conditions. Matilde Cassani intervenes on the modulation of natural light that penetrates different spaces in the Termoli museum.

The title of the exhibition takes up the 1989 essay by the French philosopher Felix Guattari, who outlines three ecologies: environmental, social and mental.

“LE 3 ECOLOGIE” develops in all the rooms of the museum and in relation to works chosen from the permanent collection of the Premio Termoli, shaping a metaphorical itinerary with the spectator: the museum becomes an organism in which people, materials and ideas coexist. In an evocative journey through hybrid, dreamed, contaminated environments, this exhibition gives space to works and research that deal with places on both an aesthetic and social level, and that decline the relationship between nature and culture based on different geographical coordinates.

Participating artists: Matilde Cassani, Piero Gilardi, Karrabing Film Collective, Len Lye, Jumana Manna, Jonatah Manno, Silvia Mariotti, Francis Offman, Francesco Simeti, Nicola Toffolini, Micha Zweifel.
