Boha Glass’s Recent Asia Expedition
As some of you could know, Boha is on tour in Asia at the minute, hunting for up-and-coming artists, throughout a huge array of artistic fields. From nearby pottery to stone-carved smiling Buddha statues, mosaic-rimmed mirrors to superbly embroidered conventional garments, and significantly extra besides.
After arriving in Kuala Lumpur, we read about the solution bars that dotted the town and made a system to consider and uncover as several as feasible – purely for research uses of course (cough!).
We discovered ourselves ringing doorbells in weird alleyways, slipping via backpacker hostels with sleepy, puzzled, just-off-the-plane attendees, stood in their place doorway, asking yourself why well dressed persons were wandering the corridors outdoors their place at 1 am. We climbed dark, spiral staircases – concealed at the back of fast paced restaurants and this a person was the very best of all…
From the exterior, it appeared like a typical outdated avenue store, with the only clue currently being the title of the bar (PS150) sprayed in black graffiti paint on the facet of the wall. We walked back again and forth together the avenue, contemplating Google experienced given us duff info prior to we hesitantly attempted the doorway for the to start with time. It went on a good deal further than where by Anna was sitting and the cocktails have been excellent!
We ended up stumbling property (the pavements had been in a pretty lousy state of maintenance 😉 ) to our lodge in the wee hrs of the early morning, extensively sensation that we experienced experienced a truly adventurous night!

Street Art – Penang and KL
A minor further up the coast is the great previous UNESCO heritage town of Penang. In the heart of aged George City, the area is abuzz with some amazing avenue art. It all commenced in 2012 when Lithuanian-born community resident Ernest Zacharevic was commissioned to brighten up the city’s fading facades with artwork depicting the lives of locals. Given that then, a lot more artists have included their possess mark to create some lively road art that undoubtedly enlivens the city’s outdated Stucco partitions.
To see all the art is a bit of a schlep, specially in the roaring warmth of July, but we managed to drag ourselves all around to see a sizeable part of the artwork (whilst perspiring profusely). Sometimes, you would walk a few of clicks, only to be greeted with a mural so pale that it was tricky to discern what it at first was. But, most of the time it was nicely well worth it, and some had been very close to a bar, so we experienced a excellent excuse to ‘cool off’ under the followers on the shaded verandas right after using up some serious shoe leather-based.
Together with Thailand, Bali, Singapore and Vietnam, Malaysia was not our favorite location, but the key bars and the avenue art built our time there really enjoyable.
If you are preparing your own journey to Malaysia, we would definitely endorse KL, Penang and Melaka. Just be guaranteed to look at out the street art in all a few cities and see how numerous mystery bars you can uncover in KL!
