Artist Jake Sheiner’s modern functions depict scenes of suburban isolation, set in opposition to the backdrop of his household metropolis of Los Angeles. Personal in sizing, the acrylic paintings explore liminal areas — landscapes present at the changeover between two other places or states of remaining. “I am interested in how these tranquil spaces can be perceived as deserted, or frozen in time, and how this a bit unsettling experience is also common in our minds,” he describes. “I think this nostalgia for a location the viewer feels a link to, but has under no circumstances been, is partly due to the ubiquitousness of the LA landscape in pop culture.”
Sheiner’s paintings are a visible diary of kinds, reflecting his life in Los Angeles by capturing scenes he has physically encountered, both by probability or intentionally. “They are each voyeuristic and autobiographical in nature,” he suggests. “Much like the tactics of Edward Hopper, Fairfield Porter, David Hockney, or Lois Dodd, I am continuously looking for moments deserving of investigation via the act of portray.
