Film School – Do You Really Need Film School to Become a Filmmaker?

Do you really need film school to become a wildly successful filmmaker?

The answer to that question is a resounding no. Don’t get me wrong, there was a time were a film school education was invaluable to a filmmakers success. But nowadays with the advent of digital technology it has evened the playing field for those who aspire to make a living in this business without having to spend tons of money on tuition.

To go to a top flight film school, your looking at spending upwards of $100,000 for tuition. Remember there was a time when film school didn’t even exist. Alfred Hitchcock did not spend a day in a classroom to become the legend that he is. In fact, Hitchcock and many others were from an era were the filmmaking craft was honed on the job.

If this is the career path you want to head down realize this, it is not an easy road. In fact it is extremely competitive and you must have a laser focused determination and plan of action. There are certain things about film school that you will have to duplicate.

  1. You must surround yourself with like minded individuals and form a coalition of sorts to critique each others work. Let’s face it, mom and dad will love everything that you do. Your work has to be put to the test of an unbiased audience.
  2. Get out there and network with the movers and shakers in the business. Make yourself known as a go to guy in your area when it comes to making films and being creative.
  3. Do yourself a favor and dive into all the resources that you can in print and online. There are many courses that will help you achieve your dreams and put you where you want to be. Which is with your name in lights on the silver screen.

If filmmaking is your true passion, go full speed ahead at achieving your dream. If there is one thing that should stick in your head for the rest of your life it’s the saying “believe it and you can achieve it”.
