In conjunction with the exhibition Lee Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse, renowned scholars will explore imagination, artistic process, and innovation in fashion and art to further examine the interdisciplinary impulse that defined McQueen’s career, legacy, and sources of inspiration.

Critical to all fashion exhibitions are curatorial collaborations between mounting experts and artists on the display of costume objects. Costume and Textiles installation specialist Melinda Kerstein discusses her role in Mind, Mythos, Muse and how she worked with the curators from the inception of the exhibition to devise and build mounts for each garment in ways that helped to support each thematic section, all during a global pandemic. Artist and designer Michael Schmidt, the creator of custom-made headpieces incorporated into the exhibition, elaborates on his methodology and his sources of inspiration, reflecting on the work of Lee Alexander McQueen and the nature of the creative process.

In response to the global pandemic, the Eighth Triennial R.L. Shep Symposium is presented on YouTube as a free video series, released from May through August 2022 on the last Tuesday of each month.

Guests are encouraged to RSVP for a reminder email.

R.L. Shep Triennial Symposia are supported by the R.L. Shep Symposium Endowment for Costume and Textiles, LACMA.
